Junior Recital

When writing these pieces, I became interested in film captures;

their analog and personal quality.

A series of captures that I took can be found here.

A few objects in the pictures can be easily identified:

A person, a window, a collection of books, etc.

However, you may also find pictures of things you can’t identify:

blobs of dark greens or

grained black with a colorful vignette,

or other things you can’t make out.

These captures, both identifiable and unidentifiable, can be full of love and being while others

are quiet and introspective.

These photos may mean nothing to some of you,

they may mean something to others,

but they mean everything to me.

These musical works are attempts to replicate this abstraction.

In lieu of program notes, I have provided one quote for each work that reflects my feelings towards the piece.

Pigs

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again;

but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

George Orwell

Dismemberment of Air

“Woke up screaming with no sound. The room filling with a bluish water

called dawn. Went to kiss grandma on the forehead

just in case.”

From Notebook Fragments by Ocean Vuong

Is this real enough for you?

“It is important that I learn how to be, by that I mean accept everything about me.”

Julius Eastman
